Fruit Growers Victoria (FGV) urges government action for Australian producers on the ACCC Supermarket Inquiry Report Findings
FGV urges the federal government to act swiftly on the actions needed after the findings and recommendations of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Supermarket Inquiry report, which highlights critical concerns regarding pricing practices, competition, and transparency within the supermarket sector.
The report underscores the challenges consumers and suppliers face due to market concentration and pricing strategies employed by major retailers. FGV supports the ACCC’s recommendations to improve pricing transparency, rebate clarity and ensure fairer outcomes for fruit and vegetable growers and suppliers.
“Growers have been feeling the pressure of increasing costs of production coupled with retailers squeezing suppliers for below cost prices. The report recommendations for produce suppliers highlight the need for fairer negotiating power for produce suppliers. said Mitchell McNab, FGV’s Chairman
“We urge the government to act swiftly on the ACCC’s recommendations to promote a fairer and more profitable marketplace for producers.”
The findings also emphasise the need for stronger regulatory oversight to ensure supermarkets engage in fair trading practices, preventing the exploitation of both consumers and suppliers.
“We stand with Australian producers in advocating for a fairer grocery market,” added Mitchell McNab. “We encourage policymakers to prioritise these recommendations and create meaningful change, it is critically important that within the consultation phase that all growers within the supply chain are involved”
