Cherries Grown in Victoria
Victoria produces approximately 37% of Australia’s cherries, with regions such as the Goulburn Valley, Yarra Valley & Macedon Ranges providing ideal conditions. Victorian cherry growers benefit from rich soils and a moderate climate, which allows them to grow the best cherries for you to enjoy.
Varieties and Orchard Practices
Different cherry varieties are grafted onto rootstock, and most growers cultivate at least 10 varieties that mature at different times throughout the season. This ensures that each week, at least one variety is ready for picking. Each variety has its own unique flavour and texture, and sometimes even white or sour cherries are available.
Some of the main varieties grown in Victoria include:
- Bing – Sweet, dark red, firm; mid-season (Dec–Jan)
- Lapins – Large, sweet, deep red; late season (Jan–Feb), self-fertile
- Stella – Sweet, dark red, firm; mid-season, self-fertile
- Sweetheart – Crisp, bright red, sweet; late season, good for storage
- Van – Sweet, firm, bright red; early–mid season
When visiting a “Pick Your Own” cherry orchard, look for cherries that are firm, bright, and shiny with fresh green stems. Ask if you can sample some of the different varieties — each tastes slightly different. If you’re after a special gift or occasion, you can often request the largest cherries to impress your friends with their size and quality.
