Pear Varieties Grown in Victoria
Victoria’s temperate climate is ideal for pear production, particularly around the Goulburn Valley, where approximately 90% of Victoria’s pears are grown due to the region’s perfect combination of soil, climate, and irrigation. Key varieties include:
- Williams / Bartlett – Sweet, juicy, classic fresh-eating pear; mid-season (Feb–Mar); moderate chill hours; requires thinning for quality and size.
- Packham’s Triumph – Crisp, sweet, long storage; mid-late season (Mar–Apr); moderate chill; suited to both fresh market and processing.
- Beurre Bosc (Bosc) – Sweet, aromatic, firm; mid-late season (Mar–Apr); moderate chill; requires sunny conditions for colour development.
- Winter Nelis – Juicy, aromatic; late season (Apr–May); moderate chill; good for fresh market and storage.
- Red Bartlett / Packham Red – Crisp, sweet, attractive red skin; mid-season (Feb–Mar); moderate chill; ideal for fresh market.
Growing Conditions:
Pears perform best in regions with cool winters and warm, sunny springs and summers. Trees flourish in fertile, well-drained soils and benefit from consistent watering, especially during flowering and fruit development. Adequate sunlight is important for both fruit quality and colour development. Regular pruning and canopy management help maintain tree shape, improve air circulation, and balance crop load. Pears can be affected by pests and diseases, including codling moth, fire blight, and pear rust, so careful monitoring and management are essential for a healthy, high-quality crop.
