GV Public Health Unit & Fruit Growers Victoria Partnership
Victoria’s mosquito surveillance program has detected Japanese encephalitis virus (JE virus) in northern Victoria. If you live in, work or visit inland riverine regions or areas near the Murray River, you may be at higher risk of mosquito-borne diseases like JE and Ross River virus.

What is Japanese Encephalitis (JE) Virus?
- JE is a rare but serious brain infection spread by mosquitoes.
- A free JE vaccine is available in high-risk local government areas including Greater Shepparton.
- No Medicare card is needed.
- High-risk groups include: people in affected areas, pig industry workers, mosquito control staff, and seasonal workers.
- Get vaccinated if eligible – speak to your GP or local immunisation provider.
Ross River Virus is another mosquito borne disease common in our region.
- There is no vaccine for Ross River, but most recover within 3 to 6 months.
- Symptoms: fever, swollen joints, rash, and fatigue.
- If symptoms persist, see your doctor.
Mosquito Bite Prevention
- Use repellent with DEET or Picaridin.
- Cover up with long, loose, light-colored clothing.
- Remove stagnant water to stop mosquito breeding.
- While camping/traveling:
- Ensure mosquito screens are intact.
- Use mosquito nets if needed.
- Avoid wetland areas.
Remember, protect yourself from mosquito-borne diseases. Get a free JE vaccine if eligible. Use repellent and cover up to prevent bites.
