Goulburn Valley Labour Market Forum - Update

FGV’s Michael Crisera attended a Labour Market Forum hosted by Shepparton Council, and we have now received the power point presentation delivered by RMCG. Also attached is a high level review that has been developed by RMCG providing an overview of the skill related challenges and respective statistics relating to Greater Shepparton, Moira and Campaspe.

Since the forum, action has been made in relation to an advocacy letter sent to Victorian Skills Commissioner requesting the development of a Regional Skills Demand Profile to be undertaken in our region.

In addition to this Greater Shepparton City Council has written to the Minister for Employment - Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash regarding the mentioned concerns to the recent penalties ruling, pertaining to casual rates increases within the horticultural industry.

Council will continue to advocate to State and Federal Government on both of these matters.

Council has also made contact with a Real Estate agent in relation to short term accommodation options as it was understood that this can be challenging. It is understood that accommodation for students and Doctors as an example isn’t a challenge if they are looking at staying within the region for decent durations such as 12 months etc. however students looking to visit the municipality for 2-3 weeks is problematic as landlords will always prioritise long term tenants. Council is continuing to explore this issue and is currently coordinating the development of an accommodation audit within the municipality which will enable Council to attract accommodation providers to the region once we are in a position where we can establish demand.
