Orchard Walk – Pruning and Managing Orchard Designs for the Future

By Tony Filippi

During the last week in July Victorian apple and pear growers were invited to attend an orchard walk in each of the two main growing regions conducted under the highly successful Future Orchard program.

With well over 100 participants attending between both regions confirmed the importance growers placed on searching for the information on improving their profitability within their business, especially with the cold and wet conditions experienced on both days.

The main theme was about “orchard designs for the future” and what the thought process growers needed to consider when deciding to invest, also due to the stage of the season pruning was also a main part of the delivered topics.

Both Ross Wilson and Steve Spark from AgFirst with each of these supported by growers David Finger from Vernview Orchards and Mark Trzaskoma of Battunga Orchards hosted the presentations in each of the Northern and Southern regions respectively.

Each of the “walks” started with power point presentations and ended with practical demonstrations and reinforced detailed explanations in the orchards.

Following is a brief summary of the key messages taken from both days. Click here to read more........
